A monumental win sealed with a juicy slower ball. Follows up the bumper and Carey was way too early on the forward push. 109ks offcutter landed on the fuller side of length around middle and off and spun away past the shoulder of Carey's bat as he tried to push it straight. Off stump dinked and Rana leaps up in delight. May the celebrations begin.
Australia vs India, 1st Test at Perth,AUS vs IND, Nov 22 2024 - Match Result
Quite the historic Test win, ditto for the match itself. It's shown India have the ability to bounce back after a crushing home whitewash against New Zealand, and Australia require introspection before getting in to Adelaide. With four Tests to go, being 1-0 doesn't rule out the chance of a comeback but Australia have won just one Test series after being 1-0 since 1970 (home and away). They've lost 24 series and drawn five, and three of the five drawn series were two-match series. India will have a lot of time to celebrate this colossal achievement, they'll have Rohit return for Adelaide. Maybe a couple other changes too, that promises to be a riveting Test too. Join us for it, lots of reportage and analysis will be on the site (and app), please check it out. For now, I'm Ekanth, signing off on behalf of Andrew McGlashan, my co-commentator, our scorers M Venkat Raghav, Sudeep Poojari, and K Vairavan.
ICYMI: The first day of the IPL auction was full of action, here's how the teams stacked up at the end of the day. There's more coming up later today, coverage on the live blog will begin soon. You can also check out what the IPL teams need on day two of auction (Plenty to do for Mumbai Indians and RCB)
Jasprit Bumrah, India captain and POTM: Very happy. We were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded, I'm really proud of the team. I played here in 2018 - I remember the wicket started soft and becomes quicker. This one was less spicy; we were really well prepared. I told everyone to keep faith in their process and ability. Experience does matter but faith helps do something special. Jaiswal's best Test innings so far, he left the ball well being an attacking batter, I didn't see Virat out of form - difficult to judge that on difficult pitches. But he was good in the nets. We always enjoy the support from the crowd, when the backing is there we feel good.
Pat Cummins, Australia captain (is chatting to Bumrah and can't hear Adam Gilchrist call him at first. He jogs in a bit late): Fairly disappointing. Prep was good, all firing, it was one of those games where not much went right. Fair bit to look at. Long gap between this Test and the next is what it is. You want to get on the horse quickly after a game like this but we will take a couple of days' rest and get training in Adelaide. We didn't give ourselves a chance in a few different facets - like the finish on day 1 with bat, we conceded a couple of big partnerships in the third innings too, few different areas to look at. There's a lot of experience in the side, this summer there's a sample size of one [Test so far], players are going about it well but lots of work to do, there will be lots of conversations on what we can do better against a similar attack in same conditions.
India in historic sporting action is not done for the day yet. Across in Singapore, a youngster is on the brink of immortality. You can follow match 1 of the chess World Championship match between D Gukesh and reigning champ Ding Liren LIVE right here .
A clinical day-4 performance from India, as was expected. Siraj removed Usman Khawaja early with a bit of extra bounce. Head attacked and Smith was gritty but the latter was done in by a peach from Siraj that decked away to find the edge. Head and Marsh, the in-form middle-order attackers, had to put up yet another rescue act, which they were doing nicely. Head and the partnership were in the 80s but Bumrah returned and ended both with a brutal set-up and execution. Got Head on the back foot and had him fishing outside off on his return over. Reddy enjoyed some low bounce to dismiss Marsh and that was the game effectively done.
Bharath Janarth: "No docking of points for Aussies for slow over rate? " Almost certain there will be. The news will be published on our site once the official announcement is out.
Raja: "I'm sure former cricketers are going to have a go at the Aus players for the Camaraderie shown after such a humiliating defeat. This is not how Aus teams behave." Well, there will be a lot said around it, most of it nonsense. If being nice the thing that made cricket teams lose games, cricket would've sucked.
Prasanna S: "India back on top in WTC table."
3. Record of away teams in this WTC Cycle - 24 wins, 25 losses. That record was 19-38 in the previous cycle (2021-23) and 18-34 in the first cycle (2019-21)
2. India's third-biggest win by runs, away from home
Stats from Sampath: 1. Only one team has won by a bigger margin than India's 295 runs despite scoring only 150 (or less) in their first innings - 343 runs by West Indies against Australia in 1991 Bridgetown Test, where they made only 149 in their first innings.
Jalan: "Can India carry forward the 295 runs to next test ? " Just momentum
3:49pm, Day 4, End of Test: West Test put to rest, Australia had never lost one at Perth Stadium, that streak's also put to rest. Bumrah carries a stump, deserves every souvenir he wants. He's been so good. Hugs between Bumrah and Rana, Rahul and one of his team-mates too. More nice scenes - Marnus and Ashwin having a chat, Kohli has arms around Head's shoulder.
135ks shortish ball outside off is pulled over the infield at wide midwicket. No one there, long chase for Siraj from mid-off, he cleans up close to the ropes as Carey takes two
Glances it off the front foot leg side. No single taken
Carey ducks but the bouncer skids lowish and hits him on the back. On the sweater though, he's okay. Rana checks in
Hazlewood gets real low and deadbats the full ball right in front
Looks to defend the fullish ball straight, inside edges it into the ground, towards short leg
Three close-in leg-side fielders with slip. Around
Goes across for the sweep, looked to have edged it onto body. Ball rolls behind square. Carey happy to give Hazlewood two balls to survive
Shout for lbw, impact looked outside off even if there was no edge. Carey tried defending towards cover, ball close to inside edge but looked to have missed it. Was a length ball looped up outside off that came in with the angle towards fourth
Anuj: "Hey @Ekanth, My friend Sahil thinks all these comments published by cricinfo are just AI generated. What do you think?" Does AI think?
Cuts it late to get it to Rahul at backward point, who shows off from football skills to lift it up
Cuts the length ball outside off to point, who's a touch deep. No single taken
He's okay. Thankfully. Let's continue
133ks Bouncer smacks Hazlewood on the helmet, replay shows it was on the back of the head as he was turning right and then back with the bat on the other side. Rana asks if Hazlewood's okay, he says yes. Kohli comes in and has an arm around Hazlewood, checking in. Hazlewood is in good spirits as the physio comes on later to perform the test
Fullish on off, Hazlewood stays leg side of the ball and defends to cover. He's seen off the one ball... and will have to do it again as Rana overstepped.
Gives Hazlewood one ball to face by steering it to deep point
Carey sways back as the 136ks bouncer angles towards him, his gloves are shaking about closeby when the ball was near, but he managed to keep them out of the way while going down. Excellent ball and Carey gesticulates to the bowler to let him know
Length down leg, goes past the flick to the keeper
Bumper touch down leg, squats under it
Full on off, tries to defend it straight. Squirts it off the outer-half of the bat towards point
Meanwhile, there are very few things we see that's new in sport. Over in football, Harry Kane did just that with a goal which was unique in its imagination and execution, perfect in its skill, pure in its simplicity. The kind of goal that will have everyone trying to recreate it.
Fullish on off, defended towards midwicket with a straightish bat
Inside edge onto pad, rolls to slip. Was a length ball on fourth that he wanted to push to cover
Abhiram: "Largest margin of defeat was more than 600 odd runs against England.. saw it on TV yesterday!" Yep, 675
Defends this one in front
