"That's a devastating win for Pakistan," yells Mark Nicholas on air. For once, it is not the usual Nicholas hyperbole too. Has there been a more emphatic win in a World Cup quarter-final? Kamran puts West Indies out of their misery by muscling a short of length ball outside off in front of point. Pakistan have knocked West Indies out of World Cup 2011.
West Indies vs Pakistan, 1st Quarter-Final at Dhaka, Mar 23 2011 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Pakistan won by 10 wickets (with 175 balls remaining)
On behalf of Sriram Veera and the rest of the gang, this is Nitin Sundar signing off. See you all tomorrow!
That winds up our coverage for today. There's plenty to look forward to ahead of the Motera masterpiece coming up tomorrow. Either Ponting, or Tendulkar could be playing their last World Cup game tomorrow. Be there for the fun!
'Clinical Pakistan storm into semi-final' is the headline of Andrew McGlashan's match report, and rightly so. This is among the most one-sided quarter-finals you will ever see. It was literally a 'knockout' match and West Indies are down and out.
Presentations
Hafeez is the Man of the Match "I really worked hard over the last couple of days and it worked for me. The coach told me a couple of days back that I would bowl with the new ball, and I tried it at the nets. I just kept them on a line and length today, and it worked. My batting form came back at the right time and I hope to carry it on."
Afridi: "This is a great gift to give back to the nation on Pakistan Day. We tried to stick to our plans and the boys have done a great job doing that. Kamran and Hafeez did really well. Personally I just tried to maintain line and length, these were great conditions for spin if you landed it on the length. We had tried Rehman against NZ and Aus, he did well, and today we backed Hafeez and he pulled it off with the ball."
Sammy: "Definitely not enough runs on the board .. We didn't counter the bowling well, and fell well short. We lost wickets in clusters in spin through the tournament, and today was no different. Some bright spots - a number of people under the age of 27 - Roach, Rampaul, Bishoo and a few youngsters who should be around for the next World Cup, so we should prepare for that. Bishoo has done excellently for Guyana and is one of the positives."
Stylishstud: "if this was pro-wrestling we'd call this a Squash Match - where the weaker opponent is pulped to bits without even striking one punch to the stronger one. This is like a Brock Lesnar squash!"
Farhan: "My Depression is over. Pakistan has paid back the 10 wicket win by West Indies from 1992. Nothing else matters to me right now."
Ravi: "@Bobby: Selling your West Indies jersey?? Who's buying?"
Praveer: "From a neutral perspective, it is really sad to see such a one sided QF, probably Bangladesh will have made a better fist of this."
Gul: "I am enjoying the new ball. I have done a lot of hard work before the World Cup, including in New Zealand. Back then, Waqar-bhai told me he wanted me to take the new ball in the World Cup. So happy that things have worked out."
Handshakes all around. Smiles for Pakistan, disappointment writ large on the West Indies faces. They just did not turn up today. Gul softened them by nailing Gayle, and the rest had no answers against some sharp and incisive spin. Serious questions to be answered about their combination, and the elephant in the room is their captain, whose presence in the side kept out an arguably more talented allrounder. Sarwan and Chanderpaul have had horrible World Cups, and their futures could come under the scrutiny.
another bouncer from Roach, Kamran ducks under it in a hurry.
short again, outside off, Hafeez mistimes the cut but gets a single away backward of point
back of a length again, Kamran skips inside the line and whips through backward square leg for a single
sorry West Indies, NOTHING is going your way today. Another top bouncer from Roach, has Hafeez in all sorts of trouble as he pulls. The top edge swirls into the Mirpur night and lands safe well in front of fine leg
top-notch from Kamran. Roach has had him in strife with the short balls. No such problems against Rampaul who angles one too far in. Kamran stays inside the line and controls the pull with a pleasing roll of the wrists.
slanted into the pads, Kamran works it without timing off the pads to the leg side
over-pitched outside off, Kamran looks to lean into a punchy drive but finds mid off
back of a length on off stump, Kamran gets behind it and defends to the off side
Pakistan go past 100. Hafeez works it away to the outfield for three more. Nice and energetic running. All over bar the shouting for the WI.
fullish ball on off and middle, played back down the track
short again to end the over, Kamran hangs back and drops it to the off side
some more short stuff, Kamran is not getting into the best of positions to pull and heaves this away without making contact, towards the keeper
another short ball, another pull and again Kamran can't get it away. In fact he's through the shot too early this time and takes a blow on the elbow. Ouch.
length ball on off stump, Kamran gets half forward and check drives to mid off
short ball, pushes Kamran back and he is on the hop as he defends towards point
one of those few occasions when a batsman has mishit something this evening. No worries, even that's gone for four. Roach hustles Kamran with a bouncer, and the top edge whistles away high and fine for four through the leg side
Salman: "So, Pakistan will be playing their 6th World Cup semi final on March 30. Is this not a record?" Not sure. How many have Aus played?
Niala Baboolal: "I am ashamed to call myself a West Indian. Empty stadiums for the home series are the consequences of poor performances like these."
short of a length on middle to end the over, Hafeez looks to work it to the leg side, but can't get it off the square
this one ends on middle and leg, Hafeez nudges to square leg
he's got some consistent inward movement today, has Rampaul. This time Hafeez works him with the angle to midwicket
