Chatara finishes it off with a scalp! Zimbabwe win by 14 runs! Full delivery on middle and off stump. Maqsood tries to tonk it into next week but loses his shape completely. Slices it terribly and the fielder on the long off fence settles under it and completes the catch!
Zimbabwe vs Oman, 21st Match, Super Six at Bulawayo, CWC Qualifier, Jun 29 2023 - Match Result
5:43pm Right. That will be that from us for tonight. Tomorrow, Sri Lanka will take on the Netherlands in another Super Six clash that could have massive ramifications. Do join us for what could turn out to be an epic encounter. Until next time, this is me (Shashwat) signing off on behalf of Madushka, Ranjith and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo! Goodbye and take care!
Craig Ervine, Zimbabwe captain: (How relieved he is) Very relieved. It was a tough game of cricket for us. (On the score) When he started batting, we felt 280-290 was going to be a good score. When we started our bowling innings, we figured out the pitch was good to bat on. Thankfully Sean Williams produced a special innings to get us up to 330 (332). (On the bowling display) The wicket did seem quite a bit different to the morning. Our bowlers missed our lengths and our lines a little bit and made it easier for Oman. (On what is a good score) It is quite tough to say. You lose the toss and you get put into bat, the first 10 overs were quite touch. We thought 280 was a good score. Obviously bowling second, we have to look at around 300-320. If the wicket is going to get better, you need a little bit extra to defend that. (Message to the team) We have been playing some really good cricket. I don't think we need to change too much. I thought today we still did our job extremely well. Two days to bounce back before we face Sri Lanka.
Zeeshan Maqsood, Oman captain: (On where the game was lost) I like to start from the start. We did not do well in the field. We dropped catches, could not stop them from running twos and singles. We gave away 30-40 runs extra. In the second half, we got an amazing start. Prajapati scored a hundred - that was a plus point for us. In the middle phase, we gave away many wickets and that is why we could not come back and win the game. (On his injury) It is a hamstring. I am not sure (on when he will be fit), will need to have a look. Whenever we wanted boundaries, we were getting it. We were rotating strike also nicely. If I had not gotten injured, maybe we could have changed the game.
Sean Williams, Player of the Match: (On the pitch and how he constructed his innings) It was a pretty good wicket. Slow to start off with, difficult to hit the boundaries off the seamers in particular. Felt running between the wickets was key. Tried to take the spinners on. Bowling got difficult towards the end but credit goes to our bowlers. They bowled really well towards the end. (On his mindset) Staying nice and calm is the most important thing. Running between the wickets is one of the most important things in cricket. It puts pressure on the bowler. The moment you show that intent, it puts pressure. When I first saw the wicket, I thought 270 would be a very good score. Thankfully everyone chipped in there and we got up to that total.
5:25pm Zimbabwe eventually got past the finish line but it was not before Oman gave them a scare. Oman's run-chase was led by a superb Prajapati ton. He batted excellently, picked the gaps well and punished the loose balls. Unfortunately for Oman, they had to see their captain retire hurt mid-way through his innings - a setback that muddled their plans. By the time he came out to bat again, Oman were playing catch-up and his inability to run added to their woes. There was also a passage where Oman decided against taking singles, and while the idea might have been to hit as many boundaries as possible, it did not quite work out that way.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, would be relatively pleased with how they closed out the game, even if they would have liked the margin of victory to be greater. Muzarabani bagged three wickets, as did Chatara. Raza was good during the middle overs too, with Ngarava's angle and bounce causing the Oman batters problems. The one aspect where Zimbabwe nudged ahead of Oman, though, was their fielding. They snaffled up half-chances and that always kept the hosts ahead of the game. Oman, in contrast, spurned a few presentable chances and ultimately ended up conceding a total that was beyond their reach.
length delivery way outside off stump again. Left alone by Maqsood and called a wide by the umpire
another slot ball outside off stump. Maqsood hangs back and thrashes it past long off for another boundary!
another wide full toss. This one is way outside the tramlines and the umpire has no qualms in calling it a wide
into the stands! Slot ball on middle and leg stump and Maqsood finally middles it. Sits deep in his crease and clubs it over cow corner!
full toss outside off stump that sneaks just inside the tramlines. Maqsood lets it go hoping for the wide but does not get the call!
Four legal deliveries, and Zimbabwe are home...
low full toss on leg stump. Nadeem clinks it off the toe-end and ambles down to the other end
28 runs needed off five. Four sixes and a four should do it
full toss outside off stump. Maqsood throws his hands at it but can only flay it on the bounce to deep cover
29 needed off the final over. Surely Zimbabwe will get over the line from here?
Okay, replays indicate that there was a slight spike when the ball passed the bat and that Nadeem might have gotten an inside edge. Missed wicket opportunity for Ngarava!
excellent yorker angled across the batter outside off stump. Nadeem has a mow at it but only connects with the fresh Bulawayo air
slower delivery dug into the track outside off stump. Maqsood swings like a rusty gate and misses. Gumbie fumbles behind the stumps and allows a bye
full toss outside off stump. Nadeem does well to reach it and drills it towards deep cover point. Just a single, though
short and wide outside off stump. Nadeem nearly swings himself off his feet but cannot get bat on it. Maqsood, stood at the non-striker end, looks quizzically at the umpire but gets no favours
The last four balls have only yielded two runs. That could be pivotal in this close finish
yorker angled into the toes. Maqsood backs away and tucks it off his toes towards deep mid wicket
32 off 11. Oman need a couple of boundaries right about now...
length delivery angled into leg stump. Maqsood swings and misses. The ball pings off the pads into the on side. No chance for a single there!
safe! Full delivery outside off stump. Maqsood winds up and cloths it on the bounce to long on. This time, Oman take the single. Not sure why, though, especially if the idea one ball ago was to have Nadeem on strike for the penultimate over
full delivery on middle and leg stump. Maqsood powers it down the ground towards long on. Single not taken!
Fine leg and third man up in the circle
full delivery just outside off stump. Nadeem drives it down the ground for a single
34 off 15 now. This could become a boundary or bust situation for Oman with their captain not fully fit
four more! Full and wide outside off stump. Nadeem throws the kitchen sink at it and carves it over backward point
length delivery outside off stump. Maqsood reaches out for it and jabs it towards deep cover point. He then trudges across to the other end
Captain Maqsood hobbles back out to the middle. This is some show of courage by the Oman skipper
and he strikes! Brilliant yorker that starts on off stump and seems to tail into the batter late. Butt has a swish across the line and misses, getting pinned on the pads. The umpire has no hesitation in raising his finger but Butt reviews because, well, why not! There is a spike but that might have been of the bat hitting the ground. Three reds on Ball Tracking and Butt has to go!
Chatara is back
39 needed off 18 now. This has gotten a lot closer than Zimbabwe would have wanted. Can they hold their nerve to close out the contest?
