width on a full length, a futile boundary to finish! Flashed away through deep third, but it's immaterial. Australia have turned up, England have not!
Australia vs England, 17th Match, Group B at Bridgetown, T20 World Cup, Jun 08 2024 - Match Result
4.52pm So, that's a wrap. It was a thrilling spectacle for roughly three-quarters of the match, and then it was an Australian cakewalk. Real trouble again for England in a global tournament. Here's the state of the Group B table. They will need big victories against Oman and Namibia, and hope the other results go their way... we've heard that one before. Australia, meanwhile, march on with formidable poise. Are we looking at the triple world champions-elect? We can only keep watching and find out. From Miller, Alan and Thilak, good night!
Jos Buttler: "They came out with a lot of intent, under a lot of pressure straightaway, we fought well, but they took wickets at crucial times and played really well. Hindsight gives lots of decisions you could have changed, extreme conditions with the short side and the wind. Jofra bowled really well but looked like he hasn't been away at all, such variety and skill. Great to have him back. Outside the powerplay was going to be the challenge, credit to Australia, their seamers were very consistent, making us hit to the long side. We came second today, but it's all laid out for us, what we need to do."
Mitch Marsh: "Very pleased, allround game was outstanding, great game. The powerplay was the difference in the game, we learnt lessons from the first game, to trust our games. The bowlers did their thing, we have an experienced group. Patty was outstanding, tough end to bowl with the wind going across. Needed hard overs from the big guns. We'll keep learning in these conditions, keep improving and keep progressing through the tournament."
Adam Zampa is player of the match: "We play England a lot, we know their players. We've trained here and know the dimensions. A massive breeze, getting England hitting to the long boundary, difficult to hit sixes and fours. Hard to play cross-bat shots against me. Some of the wickets in the Windies you need to sum up on the spot, looking at how Rash bowled as well helped. We have great depth with our bowling attack, playing all different roles."
Saifi: "Engand need two big wins plus a favour from their arch rivals. Though Oman can beat Scotland tomorrow too which will settle things down for England! "
Mustafa Moudi : "England won 2 Championships together (2019 WC and 2022 T20 WC) but defended them terribly !! " It ain't over til it's over, but... yes
Mo: "England once again show that their current approach to white-ball cricket is too inflexible. Changing conditions and circumstances require an ability to adapt, which England didn't do by bowling first at a ground which favours batting first, and not picking Topley at a ground that suits him"
4.37pm Handshakes all round, but very different moods in the two camps. Australia march onwards, England are looking for favours already. They aren't out yet, but their washout against Scotland could yet have very serious ramifications.
It was a strange chase, England very much on course until moments before the halfway mark. The loss of Salt and Buttler in Zampa's first two overs wrecked their momentum, and the middle-order just lacked all puff.
another cutter into the pitch, grips and thumps Jordan in the chest as he misses his pull
back of a length, thrashed to the leg side, sticks in the pitch and doesn't get up much. This has been a deeply flaccid second half of the chase from England
Leon: "NRR? If Scotland win tomorrow, England are out " Not quite. They've still got to face Australia
clipped to the on-side, another single
back to pat-ball, as Brook opens the face and guides a push into the covers
where's that shot been hiding! Full length, Brook opens the face and lifts a one-bounce four over extra cover
Amit: "Refreshing after the IPL to see much more even contests between bat and ball with the odd match completely favouring bowlers. IPL matches used to get boring with the incessant six hitting, glad to be up till 2 am watching matches like the previous one and this one!"
flat feet, outside leg, can't reach the wide line outside off
50 off six doesn't compute... here's Stoinis to close out a very impressive Australia win
rolls the fingers, another wide cutter, Jordan slaps with flat feet and can't connect. Cummins is done, another mighty effort
It's all about NRR now... here's Jordan
back of a length, pace off, flogged through the line, straight to Starc at long-off! An ugly innings ends, and England are already in need of snookers
huge hack, big edge, Zampa almost holds a worldie! Fires out his right hand, high above his head, but can't control it as he lands. It won't matter
yorker, that's lovely bowling, squeezed off the toes to the leg side. England are adrift now
back of a length, another ambitious swing, but the pace is off and Brook can't time that at all. Out to the leg side
It's nearly five a ball now... England want sixers!
full length, wide of off, cracked off the toe out to deep point
Cummins returns
tossed right up into the blockhole, slashed into the covers, Zampa's game-breaking spell is done! What a white-ball bowler he has become. Every ball a coconut
follows the batter as he makes room to leg, has a hack and that's wriggled past the keeper too. Doesn't reach the rope, so significantly less than the requirement
steps into the length, mashed over the bowler! The first boundary for 21 balls, and it's a well-picked googly. Too late surely, but two more of those in this over, and this chase has a pulse. We have a delay for a new ball, that one has travelled outta here
so tidy from Zampa, another ambitious cuff through the good length, but no timing or placement, gathered in the deep
rocks back to the length ball, cracked hard off the back foot, wide long-off gathers. This is pedestrian
makes room to leg, meets the full length with another pushed single
SamC: "England need to be smart here and watch out for the NRR...with the Scotland washout, it will be very important! " Too right, this is in danger of being a very sizeable margin
pounds the pitch, back of a length, outside off, another swing and a miss. Livingstone wants a wide but he's not getting it. There's no way back for England now
