short ball, swung away through square leg, Scotland smash their chase to win by seven wickets! And that will do wonders for their net run rate, too
Oman vs Scotland, 20th Match, Group B at North Sound, T20 World Cup, Jun 09 2024 - Match Result
4.05pm: That's yer lot from Antigua, where Scotland have once again stuck a flag in the ground. The Associates are coming, and coming specifically for England, the T20WC defending champions. Andrew Miller's report will tell the tale, and there'll be plenty more to come over the next week - England play on Thursday and Saturday, before Scotland's game with Australia caps off Group B on Sunday. Oh, and if cross-border rivalry is your thing, there was a tasty finish to the other game taking place today. Thanks for your comments, we'll be back for more tomorrow. Bye!
3.55pm: Time for the captains to speak, starting with Aqib Ilyas: "We started well in the powerplay, 175 could have been a good score, but we had too many dot balls on a flat track. In the batting we have to improve. 150 was par but we dropped too many chances. Catches, if you take them, puts pressure on the other team. This is cricket, sometimes you are at the top, sometimes you are down. [What next?] Stay positive, everyone will be upset, next game we never know. We will hope to compete against England."
Scotland's Richie Berrington: "Really pleased, important to get the win in a tough game. [Oman fast start] Important on this wicket to work out how to bowl, thought we brought it back well towards the back end. We didn't have a score in mind. It was more about working out the lengths to bowl. One side was going to be hard to defend, but thought we did that really well. Really happy with the score we had to chase. It was important to get a good start, the way the guys played at the top was excellent. Partnership between Munsey and McMullen was brilliant, great to see Brandon get a score today. [NRR] Wanted to get into a position to win the game, then when we got there we thought we'd target the short side. We'll enjoy this moment."
3.50pm: An utterly ruthless display from Scotland, breezing to their target with almost seven overs to spare - they will go top of Group B once again, and have lit a fire under England's rickety-looking T20 title defence. Already Scotland have opened up a NRR gap of almost 4 on England, who will need to truly pulverise Oman and Namibia and then hope that Australia can do them a favour in the final game... which you can imagine they might not be overly keen to do!
Brandon McMullen is Player of the Match for his unbeaten 61 off 31: "Very chuffed to get the win for the team. Short boundary with the breeze, we decided it was a key element of the game and that paid off for us. [NRR in mind?] Priority was to win and get the points but at drinks we said we should get this done. We are confident going into the Australia game, always trying to raise the bar. That's the plan going forward."
Bilal returns but the jig is up for Oman. And quite possibly England, too
"Scotland with one eye on the NRR already?" Indeed, Dave, and a Begbie-like glint in their eye!
quicker and flatter, beats the edge as Cross aims a cut
All of a sudden, Scotland just need two to win
repeats the dose! Using the wind, it's not a long hit to that side, plops over the boundary boards at deep backward square leg again
targets the leg side, slogged all the way! Cross plants the front foot and heaves heartily across the line
drops back and slaps one past the diving Ayaan to long-off
down on one knee, hoicked with the breeze! Firm slog-sweep from McMullen for a 76m six over deep backward square leg
round the wicket, looped up at 89kph. Cross nurdles it towards point
Ayaan Khan on to bowl, SLA
Update: UltraEdge shows that ball actually grazed off stump on its way into the keeper's gloves!
oof, beats the outside edge! Some grip and turn, McMullen plays down the Bakerloo. Wasn't far from hitting the top of off, either
crunched over cover, the fielder's dive is in vain! Fifty up for McMullen, from 27 balls, he raises the bat to the team balcony. Been a fine knock since coming in during the powerplay
floated up and belted through long-off! Strong bottom-handed thrash through the line, Ilyas can't get a hand to it and the ball races away
steered to backward point
swiped down the ground as McMullen stretches on to the front foot. Kushi makes a bit of a meal of it at long-on
tossed up, spinning away and dabbed into the covers
flat on the stumps, McMullen drips back and picks out short cover
angled in and dragged away on the sweep for one
flattish outside off, defended square
angled in and pushed down the ground
dropped in the deep! McMullen gets another life, despite picking out Rafiullah pretty comfortably on the midwicket fence. Running chance but he should have held on
boshed over cover! The fielder in the deep should probably do better but can't prevent it skipping away for four
Maqsood continues
On come the drinks with Scotland already eyeing up a wee dram later tonight in celebration of topping the group
Meanwhile, over in New York, the India-Pakistan clash has reverted to type *sigh*
tossed up, possibly another googly, hits the front pad... heading down, I think. Cross doesn't look too perturbed, and no review forthcoming from Oman
