paddle sweep taking it on the full to the vacant fine leg boundry and West Indies celebrate a deserved victory
South Africa vs West Indies, 1st Match at Cape Town, Feb 09 2003 - Match Result
A great win from the West Indies after a poor start and then a wonderful innings by Lara ably supported by the rest of the middle order to post a formidable 278
South Africa started well but it was their poor disipline in the field that cost them this match after exceeding the time and being fine an over for it
In the end they were just 4 short of a win but more than likely could have cruised it had there been the 6 extra balls
To be fair the West Indies dominated the middle portion of the innings with Captain Hooper doing brilliantly to marshal a team that really was a bowler light
He missed a trick but packing the legside field and having his spinners fire it in at Klusener's leg stump
But it was he who was out on the mid wicket boundary to take the catch that say the back of Klusener and effectively seal the win
If this is anything to go by we can expect a wonderful tournament
They crossed and Boje will face the final ball
brilliant stuff from Sarwan as Ntini got under it and lofted it high to deep extra cover and the fielder made huge ground to take a running catch
bouncer and Ntini has a swot at it, whisks past his nose
Ntini in and they didn't cross
3 men on the mid wicket fence and Klusener tries to clear them but the Captain had put himself there and was never going to make a mistake
makes some room and Drakes wisely follows him, precious dot ball
slower one is taken on the full out to Sarwan on the mid wicket fence
Will SA rue the slow over rate which cost them an over, we will know in 6 balls time as Drakes is asked to bowl the final over
drives out to Hooper standing on the ring at mid wicket
swing and a miss from Boje, hangs the bat out hoping really, poor shot
bottom edge onto pad goes out on the off side as Klusener was looking for maximum
drives inside the cover as Chanderpaul does wonderfully from long off pretty straight to cut it off
outside off and Klusener leaves, Umpire Venkat unmoved as the crowd bay for a wide
flat bat out to Sarwan at deep point and the buzz goes up as Klusener surveys the field
Collins being asked to bring it back for the WI
fired in at legstump, ridiculous stuff from the WI as Klusener brings up his 50 in 43 balls which has only 9 runs on the off side
steps away and belts it cross batted out to Chanderpaul who has replaced Collins at deep bwd square
takes it on the full sweeping between the men on the mid wicket fence
drives back to the bowler as this was very full and the batsmen have a word
on the bounce to Gayle moving to his right, doesn't take cleanly and they can steal one
worked off his pads to Collins who is getting jeers at deep bwd square
tucked up and defends out on the off
waits and guides it to the sweeper on the cover boundary to bring up the 50 partnership in 30 balls
