Mitchell has taken a gem at cover over his head, timing the jump immaculately, and that will be the end of this lopsided affair. It was shortish ball with slight bit of width, Theekshana tried to spank it over cover but the fielding has been spectacular today and they've lived up to their credo. New Zealand win the series comprehensively
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI at Hamilton, NZ vs SL, Jan 08 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
We hope you enjoyed our coverage. Hope to see you all on Saturday for the third ODI. Until then, it's goodbye from all of us
Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka Captain: It was a fair pitch, bad batting in the powerplay cost us the game. Trying to find a way to (get things right in ODI). We should have done better with overcast conditions...expected to pick few wickets in the powerplay, but we couldn't do that. Comeback is the key, and we have to get out of (this situation)
Mitchell Santner, New Zealand Captain: I think we opened up pretty well, we lost wickets at times, but I think still pretty happy with the score on a wicket that offer a little bit. It was still very competitive, knew we had to bowl really well at the start. Credit to Theekshana, he knew what to do; bowled wide and made us hit to the bigger side. (On toss) Usually it does swing a little bit under the lights but the lengths and the bounce our bowlers got made it challenging. I guess it's another important game, but we will get different conditions in Pakistan but good to have roles clear...
Rachin Ravindra, Player of the Match: I enjoy ODI format although you don't see many games happening now. I've got a pretty nice bat so I can't complain. Probably could have hit it over the top but it was a nice catch. We don't play for milestones. The way our boys bowled was fantastic
It was a mighty impressive bowling performance from New Zealand as the seamers started the rot in the powerplay, with the fate of the match decided then and there as Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, and Kusal Mendis departed early in the piece. Some resistance from Kamindu Mendis made things interesting but wickets continued to fall at tegular intervals, and they never seemed like taking the game away. Some disastrous runouts made things go from bad to worse. O'Rourke took three, Henry bowled tightly and claimed one, Duffy snapped up two while Smith and Santner picked up one wicket apiece; everyone chipped in, and the bowlers had a wonderful day at the office. Handy contributions from Ravindra, Chapman, Mitchell, and Phillips ensured they posted an above-par total in a rain-curtailed affair, giving their bowlers plenty to defend. The ball was moving extravagantly in the powerplay and the New Zealand seamers hit the right areas, wreaking havoc on the visitors. Their impeccable control of line and length was remarkable, a testament to the strong fast-bowling stocks in New Zealand. The squad is shaping up nicely for the upcoming Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Sri Lanka face plenty of challenges. They weren't tight with the ball early on and while they made some recovery at the death, a lot of damage had already been done by then. Also, the batting is flimsy and vulnerable to collapse. It was a forgettable day for the visitors.
Will Sri Lanka bag a consolation win on Saturday and gain some confidence as they gear up for the marquee event in Pakistan?

Tautoru : "Excellent Black Caps victory. pleasure to watch!
Bit short and came back in a shade from outside off, knucked past cover with grace, everything so right about that stroke, opened the face and timed it to perfection
Over the wicket, dug in short and it wobbles away from the tramline on off; tries to cut with full extension of the arms
Clears front leg and loads up for a big slog and ends up getting an inside edge to short midwicket. There was a slip in place as New Zealand look to wrap it up quickly
Quicker and dipping in at middle, dead bats it
Tossed fuller on middle, down on one knee to slog sweep and misses it and it trickles away to fine leg, Henry curs it off
Quicker on 94kph, holds its line from a length outside off, beats his ambitious slog sweep
Blocked into the covers
fuller and wicket to wicket, defended
That's a PHENOMENAL catch by Nathan Smith! Absolute screamer at deep third, diving full-stretch at deep third to his right and plucking it out of thin air, got a big top edge and it was on its way to the rope before Smith came up with a superman effort
Short of a length, roaring back at middle, slinks back to upper-cut and fails to put bat on it
Goes shortish and fires it outside leg-stump, wide signaled
Half-volley just outside off, picked early and panned to the rope past cover. Subtle wrists, stabbed away with confidence and clarity
Good length, angled into middle and leg, shimmies down leg and plinks it out across the line towards cover-point. Was in the air for a moment
Back of a length and cramping him for room, steps away to the leg side and punches it to cover fielder inside the ring
Around the wicket, hits the deck hard and angles in, he takes him on and pumps it into the leg-side but hasn't got the sweet spot and Mitchel takes a spectacular running catch diving forward at midwicket and made the ground quickly to catch much to the delight of the bowler. Third umpire took his time before giving it out; said on the microphone that fingers are underneath. Mendis departs after showing some resistance and eye-catching strokes. Falling apart and losing wickets quickly
Around the wicket, slow, fuller and spinning in at off, watches closely before punching it to cover
Slider. Good length and skids through the surface, rapping him on the pads, looks quite adjacent. Appeal was relentless and the umpire rose his finger in agreement. Sri Lanka review. It's a legit delivery, holds its line on middle and leg and it's missing leg-stump, ball-tracker shows it would have just gone on with the angle. Excellent review and Richard seem shocked
Good length and came back in a shade at off, backs away and forces it towards deep point
Fuller and dipping in at middle and off, defended to point
