and it is Maharaj who will finish with five! Full ball outside off. Bit of turn away. Batter tries to defend but he does so with hard hands. Pops up to silly mid off under the helmet, and that's game, set and match! South Africa win by an innings and 273 runs to sweep the Test series 2-0!
Bangladesh vs South Africa, 2nd Test at Chattogram, BAN vs SA, Oct 29 2024 - Match Result
As Aiden Markram picks up the trophy and walks towards his team-mates for a small celebration, it is time for us to bid goodbye. On behalf of Shashwat and Thilak, this is Sreshth saying ta-da!
5pm Stick around for the presentation.
Aiden Markram, winning captain: "Incredibly proud. Hard work went into it and good to see the hard work paid off. We played some really good cricket, considering the conditions we are not used to. (Three maiden centuries in the second Test) That was special. The three of them to get stuck in when it was tough to score at times.... to get the team in a strong position was immense. They could've been satisfied getting to eighty but they pushed on for the team. (Bowlers) They work really well together. Taking wickets with the new ball, no matter where you play is important. KG was special. Then others made the impact. Overall, all three facets of the game - really proud. (Targeting Lord's final of WTC?) Long way away but to be in the mix for the finals is what's driving us. Taking it Test match at a time."
Najmul Hossain Shanto, losing captain: "They played very good cricket. Very disappointed how we played. (Poor batting performances overall) I think we need to improve a lot of things. We bowled well for a few hours, but overall we need to improve. It's not about just mental. It is mental and skillwise. We need to improve in both. Taijul's bowling was a positive. Mominul showed character in the first innings. Those are positives but we need to improve. That sort of character we need in the team. The way someone like Taijul batted, got a hundred partnership, it shows we can bat. Now as a top order we need to take responsibility."
Tony de Zorzi, Player of the Match for his 177: "Happy to contribute. Aiden adds value winning the toss and then the other batters help take pressure off you. Easy to bat then and always enjoyable. We are a young side and winning away is always good. We won in West indies, now in Bangladesh, and hope to play the same way with next games."
Kagiso Rabada, Player of the Series for his 14 wickets: "Losing the toss at Dhaka wasn't the greatest start but we could turn it around. The batters did incredibly well to put us in position. Every individual in this team is willing to put their hands up. And different individuals are putting their hands up. That's why we are on top in this series. And it's no surprise. We know we have the quality, especially in the bowling. (No. 1 ranking) Yes, I guess. The game moves on. You have to keep working hard. I don't look at where I'm at on the rankings but it's a great achievement and a good motivator to keep going."
Jumbo: "This is Bangladesh's 9th innings defeat vs South Africa. Safe to say, Saffers own them."
This is a record breaking victory for South Africa. Their biggest margin (by innings and runs) ever. Full list here
4.50pm Handshakes among the visitors with Temba Bavuma also wearing a smile from the dugout. Some words of encouragement from the South Africans to the last two Bangladesh batters.
Victories don't get more comprehensive. Bangladesh were expected to offer a bit of resistance at home and on the back of that away series win in Pakistan, but they have folded easily in both Tests. A bit more of a fight in the first Test, but here in Chattogram they were blown away.
There will be some criticism of the hosts' batting, but it's tough to stand up for long when Kagiso Rabada is performing in red-hot fashion. He finishes with 14 wickets at an unreal average of 9. Keshav Maharaj finishes with 12 scalps. Taijul Islam, the ever consistent left-arm spinner, is sandwiched in between at 13.
South Africa also have batters to be happy about. Wiaan Mulder topped up his best Test score twice, Kyle Verreyne hit a century in the first Test, and we also had tons from de Zorzi, Stubbs and Mulder in this encounter. Senuran Muthusamy, bought in for this second Test, impresses with his all-round chops hitting 70 in the first innings, followed up with a match haul of 5 for 55.
Chippo: "Well played South Africa. Are we on the cusp of seeing the new generation of SA cricketers coming through? Mulder is finally fulfilling his early promise. They also have loads of depth in the spin department which is unusual! Can't wait to see Brevis break through in to the test team."
Mudassir Hashmi: "Well done South Africa. Great cricketing show all together."
Jumbo: "That's biggest margin of victory for South Africa (by innings) in their test cricket history!"
full ball around off. Blocked with soft hands
overpitched on middle, and tucked off his toes to the leg side
full ball on off. Tries to defend towards the on-side but a leading edge sends the ball back towards Maharaj
full ball around off and defended down the V
this time over long off! Some smiles finally in the crowd. Full ball, bit of room outside off, and enough space for the batter to free his arms. Deposited!
Arman: "Shanto is being criticized so heavily in Bangladesh as if he hasn't been top scorer many times during his captaincy and doesn't have the best win rates" -- To be honest, that aside, he himself wants to stop being captain so he can bat better
full ball on off and skidding through. Defended off the back foot
six more to the total! Tossed up and Hasan isn't going down defending. Clears the front leg and hammers the bowler over long on
full ball just outside off. Slower through the air. Turning away. Brings the bat down to fend but goes past the edge
full ball on middle stump and blocked back to the bowler
Umpires checking the light meter, but feel we can continue
full ball outside off. Turning away. Tries to fend, goes past the edge
full ball on off. Gets low, gets forward and sends the ball to the on side
finally! The ploy has worked. The spinners were tossing it up but the batters were making good connection. This time it is sliced poorly with the batter trying to go big down the ground, and Rabada at long off has a simple catch to complete.
full ball around off and pushed to mid on
a beauty! Delivered from wide of the crease. Drifts and lands on middle. Turns away after pitching, and goes past the bat's outside edge
full ball outside off and driven square past the infielders on the off side
Paul: "@Graham talking as if Maharaj doesn't have 11 wickets this series"
again tossed up outside off. Invitation for a tailender to give it a proper whack. And he does that, slog sweeping against the turn over cow corner!
full ball on off and pushed towards mid on
lands safe! Tosses it up on middle. Slows it down. Hasan clears the front leg and smacks it over the leg side. But he slices the shot. However, it lands at wide long on, where there's no fielder
full ball around off. Going with the arm, instead of turning. Presses forward to defend, edged onto his pad
