9.2 to OJ Pope, Pope's poor run continues! Looks for the pull, but while the length is there, the angle cramped him up a bit. His elbows are tucked in on the stroke and only manages to top edge this straight up, as DDS settles under it running to his right from square leg. 42/2 30.5 to HC Brook, Does him in with the fuller one! But Brook has reviewed straightaway. This was full, pitching on middle and clattering into the front pad. Asitha is so confident he barely looks back to appeal, and eventually the finger goes up. Brook thinks it's sliding down leg, but not enough to save him as it's umpire's call on hitting leg stump. Sri Lanka have their fourth. 130/4 93.3 to MJ Potts, swing, and a nick! Well, there you go. Sri Lanka's best bowler gets a wicket third ball. Potts climbed into the drive, but the movement did him in, and an audible scrape of bat as Madushka gathers. 393/8 99.3 to AAP Atkinson, leans back, hoicked into the deep, super take! A magnificent way to end a magnificent innings! The ground rises as one to salute a mighty knock, as Atkinson waves his bat to all corners. He took on the bouncer again, didn't get perfect hold of it, and Milan Rathnayake flings himself towards the rope to hold on in both hands, looking over his shoulder, feet way off the ground.. 420/9 101.6 to OP Stone, Hooked straight to deep fine leg, Asitha finishes with a five-for. He raises his hands as Stone and Bashir run back into the dressing room. It was a bouncer around shoulder-height, Stone had gone leg side but got followed, went through with the shot with eyes off the ball. Mendis didn't pick it up at first but it came right at his him, he took it finger pointing up. 427/10
23 | 2 | 89 | 2 | 3.86 | 100 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 1 | |
48.6 to JL Smith, edged and gone! Smith was throwing his hands a bit harder in that over, kept under wraps by Rathnayake's probing line, this one is just outside his eyeline, another wobble-seam nipping away. A thin edge on the drive, and now this innings really is Root or bust!. 192/5 77.3 to JE Root, Root-scoop, and he's fluffed it! Oh my... he tried one at Manchester and spanged it into his face, this time he makes an even bigger meal of it, and launches a huge skier to point! All that graft ... Rathnayake held his line, kept the ball big as Root tried to ramp it over deep third, and he's livid with himself, that came off his stickers and lobbed to the fielder. Warm applause from the balcony, but that is a crushing self-own, with a toiling attack at his mercy, and the new ball looming. 308/7
23 | 2 | 101 | 2 | 4.39 | 93 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 0 | |
6.5 to DW Lawrence, The change in bowling has done the trick! This was a good length but quite wide outside off. Lawrence steps right across and looks to punch this on the up. There's just enough of seam movement away though to catch the outside edge, and Sri Lanka have their breakthrough. 33/1 58.6 to CR Woakes, Short ball does the trick! Woakes is goaded into the hook and he can't keep this down at all. It flies down to deep backward square, where Asitha runs in and holds on on the second attempt. 216/6
29 | 2 | 96 | 1 | 3.31 | 124 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 0 | |
18.4 to BM Duckett, reverse-sweep, top-edge, gone! Was that a necessary shot? He plays it well, usually, but he was aiming in front of square and couldn't get over the stroke. Kumara, ever in the action this morning, tracks back well at deep point and keeps his feet in play as he completes the take. Three wickets before lunch, and Sri Lanka's gamble at the toss is currently paying off!. 82/3

6.2 to KNM Fernando, Chopped on. Madushka, who was out batting after keeping wicket for 102 overs, lasts 15 balls. Tried to punch the length ball on fourth towards mid-off, it was a feeble attempt. Luckily for Woakes, it went off the inside edge back onto the stumps. Might've decked away a touch, not much foot work from Madushka which left him playing a touch away from the body. Unlucky though. 18/1 28.6 to RMMP Rathnayake, Lovely ball to have Rathnayake caught behind. Smith hangs on this time, ball was going low and wide to his left but he got the dive in and gobbled it. He's all smiles, as are his team-mates who swarm him. 127ks three-quarter-length ball, looked like the wobble seam, landed in line with the stumps before leaving the batter. A bit of extra bounce too as that hit around the shoulder of the blade.. 118/7
8.3 | 2 | 40 | 2 | 4.70 | 34 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
23.1 to LD Chandimal, Trap, meet Chandimal. There was a catcher, close in, just behind square and Atkinson bowled at the pads. It was fullish, so flicking into the ground wasn't straightforward. Not sure if Chandimal tried that or just wanted to hit the gap. In the end, did neither. Replays show that the bat turned in Chandimal's hand upon impact, so probably wanted to play it squarer. 87/6 55.3 to PHKD Mendis, Skied, this time it's taken. Woakes under it at mid-off, and Kamindu won't ton up. Great innings nonetheless. Similar ball to the previous one, into the pitch and gave a bit of width, but got too big for Kamindu as he tried to blap it with a flat bat. 196/10

9.1 to FDM Karunaratne, Both openers out chopping on! Karunaratne trying to guide it square from a length, as he has a couple of times in his stay, under-edges it back on. Not short or wide enough. Stone, holding it in the channel just outside off, is rewarded seven balls into his Test return. Caps off a perfect session for England.. 32/2 9.6 to P Nissanka, full length, on the toes, there's a man lurking at leg slip, and Potts snaps up the second in the over! A gullible dismissal for Nissanka, he timed it well enough, but in the air all the way, straight into the midriff. 35/3
11 | 4 | 19 | 2 | 1.72 | 56 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
20.1 to AD Mathews, pings the top of off! What a wonderful ball from Potts, who has been working on that magic moment, he's been hammering the stump-to-stump line, most have ducked in, this one jags away, turning Mathews into a 'S' as the ball skims past his edge to thud the outside half of the wicket. 83/4 20.4 to DM de Silva, turned inside-out by extra nip! Two in the over from Potts, just hammering his length and letting the natural variation wreck Sri Lanka's resolve. DDS closed the face, the ball leapt off the splice, looped to Brook at second slip and now the innings is in tatters!. 83/5
7 | 1 | 21 | 1 | 3.00 | 32 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
43.6 to NGRP Jayasuriya, bowled through the gate! That's the reward for Bashir's excellent control. Jayasuriya had a rush of blood, looking to launch over mid-off and on, but Bashir gets the ball to drop like a stone outside off, grip off the deck and thump the top of leg. If it had missed, it was the simplest of stumpings. Properly done!. 153/8

18.1 to OJ Pope, Pope holes out at deep backward point! This was banged in short, presumably to tempt Pope into the hook with three men out on the leg side boundary. Pope though backs away and looks to go over the vacant offside, only to home in on the sole boundary rider. That kinda series for Pope. 69/3 44.4 to AAP Atkinson, Atkinson gets out to, what will presumably be the only time ever, a reverse pull! This was short on leg once more, around shoulder height, and Atkinson wanted to target the gaping chasm on the offside in front of square. He only manages an awkward top edge that soars straight to Kumara at fine third man. 221/7 46.6 to MJ Potts, Short down leg, half-hearted shout for a caught behind as it goes past Potts' glove. Not given on the field, but it's a great review from Sri Lanka. England lose their eighth.. 227/8
12.3 | 0 | 53 | 3 | 4.24 | 49 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
5.1 to DW Lawrence, There is a woody sound as ball passed bat but is that bat on ball? Ump says no, Sri Lanka review. There's a small gap between bat and pad as Lawrence tried defending it through cover. Ball on a fuller side of length, slanting in from wide of the crease. He was outside the line of the stumps by taking a bit step across. Looked close to bat but not can't tell even from the slow-mo replays. Oh wait, Ultra-Edge shows spikes when ball is next to bat and pad. The third umpire is convinced that it is off the bat and not just pad. The catch is being checked and is deemed to be fair. Lawrence shakes his head but has to walk back. Stokes buries his mouth with his hands in the pavilion but the Sri Lankans are thrilled. 22/1 52.6 to OP Stone, short, swung high on the blade, to fine leg! It's another steepler, plummeting at pace in front of the Sri Lanka balcony. Nissanka sets himself well and swallows the offering. Good take. 250/9 54.3 to JE Root, heaved to deep square leg, and that is that! Root looks for the big launch over the leg-side, but he doesn't get enough muscle through the stroke, and it's a good sprawling take in the corner of the ground. Off he goes, with a huge slice of history wrapped up in his knock. 251/10
9 | 1 | 36 | 2 | 4.00 | 37 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
10.3 to BM Duckett, Edged, palmed and taken eventually! Couldn't have choreographed this really. Duckett drives hard at this one that's full and wide outside off, and gets a thick edge which careens to the right of gully, who can only parry his attempted grab. But fortunately Mathews is there to gobble up the rebound at second slip. 36/2 40.5 to CR Woakes, Clattered but straight to short extra cover! Woakes backs away leg side and looks to flat bat this over the offside, but it's too flat and straight to Nissanka, who completes a sharp catch. 196/6
20 | 2 | 105 | 2 | 5.25 | 58 | 9 | 1 | 0 | 0 | |
27.4 to HC Brook, short, swings into the pull ... picks out deep midwicket! Madushka gave him a life earlier, but this came faster and flatter, and he did well, reaching high to intercept, five metres in from the rope. And as ever, the merest mention of Gilbert Jessop is enough to end any threat to his hegemony!. 127/4 37.1 to JL Smith, Jayasuriya traps Smith in front! Smith has reviewed but this looks mighty close, and he doesn't look too confident either. It was the arm ball tossed up on middle and off, and snuck under the attempted sweep to strike Smith low on the front pad. It's a big stride forward, but the umpire had little hesitation. And rightly so, as this is hitting leg stump halfway up. 171/5 |

26.2 to NGRP Jayasuriya, Edged and this one is held! Woakes bowls another full one, but it's from a little wider on the crease. Induces the drive and it takes just a little movement away to catch the edge. Brooks holds on to a good catch at second slip, this was flying to his right. 60/3 86.4 to CBRLS Kumara, Is this is it? Yes it is! England win by 190 runs! Kumara backs away and looks to swing this away, but only manages to sky it straight up. Mid-on settles under it and completes the catch and a comprehensive win.. 292/10

7.1 to KNM Fernando, edged, and Root at first slip is back in the action! That was coming in the previous over, back of a length, good kick off the deck, A fiddle outside the eyeline from Madushka, and a hard fence into Root's chest, he clings on well enough, and there's the first incision. 19/1 65.1 to LD Chandimal, Atkinson gets the breakthrough and it's the big one of Chandimal! He had jagged a few in last over, and there's a short leg in place now. This nips in and takes the edge as Chandimal presses forward, it bobs up off the front pad for an easy take. 192/6 67.2 to PHKD Mendis, plucked sharply at second slip! Kamindu flashes hard, as he is prone to do, but Atkinson's round-the-wicket angle just messes with his alignment, coming in at his body, cramping him for room, Duckett reverses his hands and picks it off high to his right. That could well be that.... 200/7 83.1 to DM de Silva, Dropped last over, but this time Atkinson gets the bigger fish! This one jags back from outside off, DDS looks to defend but all he can manage to do is defend this into the turf off the bottom of the bat, ends up bouncing on to the stumps. Is this the beginning of the end?. 273/8 85.3 to RMMP Rathnayake, Gus gets the last laugh! Five-for to go with a century at Lord's. This was short of a length angling away from off, Rathnayake goes for the pull but only manages a tickle through to Smith. 288/9

58.5 to AD Mathews, Something had to give and it does, Bashir gets Mathews Tosses this on off, across Mathews, who looks to loft this drive over mid-off but just doesn't get the height. Woakes moves swiftly to his left and completes the catch. 174/5

13.6 to P Nissanka, Stone has got Nissanka again! Three slips in place and this is snaffled up by the first of them. And it's Root too, his 200th catch in Tests, just can't keep him out. This one reared up from a back of a length, Nissanka again sought to get over it and defend but this time it finds the edge. 43/2 46.4 to FDM Karunaratne, extra kick on the leg-stump line! Stone finds some extra oomph at 87mph, and Karunaratne fends it off his arm-pit, trying to get his gloves out of the way even as he'd committed them to the defensive push. An audible flick through to Smith and Sri Lanka's resistance is broken shortly before lunch. 115/4
