dug in, short ball but above head height as Vince swipes unsuccessfully... no-ball on height! Brave win by nine wickets, the champions off to a flying start
Fire vs Brave, 1st Match at Southampton, Men's Hundred, Aug 03 2022 - Match Result
Brave won by 9 wickets (with 31 balls remaining)
9.30pm: Superb stuff from Vince, finishing unbeaten on 71 from 41 - and he can be doubly happy, after marshalling an excellent performance with the ball, each and every one of his bowlers doing what was asked of them. Mahela Jayawardene's team debrief will be short tonight, while Gary Kirsten had better start searching for a place to buy several cans of kerosene. Anyway, thanks for dropping in, as ever we'll be back for another night in the Hundred tomorrow. Cheerio!
Unsurprisingly, James Vince is the Hero of the Match: "It was nice, obviously chasing that target, the bowlers did a fantastic job. The gameplan was simple, not a lot of scoreboard pressure and we got a partnership going. We found it tough with the time, taking wickets adds a bit of pressure. Only one game but nice to get off to a winning start. Bowlers found some seam movement early on, which we thought might happen, and we put them under pressure. I know this ground really well, try to hit the pockets and leave the sixes for the big guys."
One to finish this off nice and early
short and slugged through deep square! Bounced a couple of yards in front of Higgins this time, and then straight through him despite a dive
pitched up, in the slot and Stoinis swings hard, butchers his connection through midwicket for one
"Is the lowest number of match sixes in Hundred history? Fireworks having night off!" That data I don't have to hand, Tim. But good for the environment, I suppose?
slower ball, dinked uppishly into the covers
length delivery outside off, stabbed to backward point
Ball to bowl out his balls for the night. If Brave need that many
short again and swatted through midwicket
short and crunched on the pull to deep square leg. Brings up the Brave 100
full and tickled leg side, Payne gives chase himself but can't prevent two
shorter outside off, gets an under edge through to Clarke on the bounce, who fumbles it
pitched up from round the wicket, heaved towards mid-on without timing
Payne returns, 12 needed. The biggest margin of victory by balls remaining in the Hundred is currently 32, according to TV comms
on the stumps and tucked for a couple more
thumped for a Dorothy, all the way over midwicket! Firmly struck, and just enough to bring the first six of the innings
wrong'un, spinning away as Stoinis drops back, cuts through the off side
lobbed up and nudged into the leg side
cracked off the back foot through cover, and Higgins makes a hash of it in the deep to concede four more
More lefty wristy stuff from Noor
larruped through backward point, fifty for Vince! Not a bad ball but he drops back to manufacture some room to cut, and gets away into the gap behind the sweeper. Vince serene, and so are Brave
floats up the googly, Stoinis rocks back and swats to long-on
flattish on the stumps and Vince is down low to sweep, paddles it fine and they run hard to come back for three
flighted legbreak, Stoinis plays it watchfully with an open face
Ah ha, Zamps vs Stoin. The Rumble in the Love Cafe. Slip is in
tossed up on the stumps and nudged to leg
Zampa back
"How often do you see two left arm wristspinners playing against each other?" More so in these days of fertile franchise leagues, Seb K, what with the premium on doing something differenct
