pitched up and Rashid swishes an inside edge off his pads... it trickles away but that won't bother the men in black, New Zealand win by 12 runs and give themselves an excellent shot of reaching the tri-series final
New Zealand vs England, 4th Match at Wellington, Feb 13 2018 - Match Result
10.35pm: That's about it from Wellington, where New Zealand have broken their three-match losing streak but England remain in their rut. Gnasher's report should be your next stop, then stick around for more news on the site, including updates from Ben Stokes' court appearance in Bristol. From us, it's cheerio for now. Bye!
10.30pm: Here's New Zealand captain and Man of the Match Kane Williamson: [Important win?] Obviously very important in the context of the series, in some ways a must-win against a very strong England side. We had to play good cricket today. It was important we assessed the wicket, played a lot better than it looked and we got off to a good start. [Personal performance] You always want more runs, you always train hard, that's the focus. There's been occasions recently when you want to contribute but it wasn't be. There were enough partnerships today and the two debutants played nice cameos. [Bowling?] Thought the guys stuck at it really well, Trent was outstanding at the death, but we knew it would be a challenge and the guys stepped up to the mark today."
England captain Jos Buttler: [Performance with the ball?] "Maybe 10-15 too many, that proved to be the difference, the wicket played a lot better and it was a good game. [Guptill and Williamson] They put us under pressure and we tried to find way to break that partnership... We dragged it back pretty well but they got too many. [Good start?] When Hales is in that sort of form he's as good as anyone in the world and Malan impressed again as well. We probably didn't get those cameos lower down, myself coming in and failing and that made a difference. [Need a favour from Australia?] That's what we need now, so we'll wait and see what happens."
10.25pm: New Zealand rose to the occasion at the Cake Tin. A chase of 197 is always going to be tough and, although England gave it a good crack, they were just too leaky with the ball. Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson provided the base and then the two debutants, Mark Chapman and Tim Seifert, ensured there would be no soggy bottom to the innings. They dropped rather too many catches but that aside, it was a pretty good show from New Zealand, who can make the final game against England irrelevant if they beat Australia on Friday.
pitched full outside off, clouted through cover
dot ball from Boult, all but seals it... cool as you like, full and wide and he fails to connect
Three sixes needed... What's that in Geordie?
short outside off and Wood top-edges four over the keeper! Didn't know much about it but England remain (just) in the hunt!
Mark Wood, the No. 11, to face his first ball
fired full outside off, sliced away through backward point for just a single
no, swung to the leg side, they hurry back for two
That's pretty much that, you'd think. Can Boult finish it with a hat-trick?
brilliant yorker from Southee, he can only squeeze it out towards the keeper... and then another direct hit runs out Willey! Seifert, the debutant, was alert to the run, scurried up and dove full length to underarm into the poles and catch Willey short trying to steal a single!
pitched up and flubbed through mid-off, that will only be a single...
gets it up towards the blockhole and Willey hammers it straight - but hits Southee on the boot in his follow through. Dot ball!
Jonas: "How was Boult's wicket of Jordan not a no ball? Nothing behind the line from what I saw." When his boot landed, he was just about okay, I reckon
full around off stump, bottom-handed whip from Rashid but it's just one to long-on
pitched up, 129kph on off, nothing Rashid can do with it
slides a length ball behind the pads - England need a few of those
Adil Rashid is in at No. 10
goes full and wide from over the wicket, Willey stretches to chop down on it
Tim Southee now, 29 required off 12
Boult will be on a hat-trick next over... if England survive
two in two, Plunkett yorked first ball! Take the catchers out of the equation... He stepped down and played all around it, Boult rattles the woodwork again and NZ are closing in relentlessly
timbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Full and straight, Boult pings off stump! Jordan has to swing for the hills but the bowler is bang on the money and England are running out of loose change
short ball, it sits up for Jordan to smash through midwicket, a wristy pull and he gets it in the gap
Anthony: "Crazy! If there was anyone I'd want under a skyscraper it would be Southee! Goes to show what pressure can do."
fired full and wide towards the tramlines, 133kph and Willey was set to swing, could only jam
e the toe of the bat on it
pitched up towards the blockhole, swung away to fine leg off the inside edge
shaping in from over the wicket, Jordan misses with a big swing... but Seifert also fails to intercept it and they scamper a couple of byes
Three overs to go, England need 37 with the batting running out. Trent Boult returns
Jiten Chandaran: "16.2 - Carrom ball?" Yep, could well have been. Though Malan munched it
dropped! Another howler, Southee barely getting a hand on this one! Jordan top-edged a slog into the leg side, Southee came in from deep midwicket and went with the ball, crouching low... but it burst through and hit him on the knee!
