The Wanderers Cricket Stadium, home of Gauteng (Transvaal) cricket seems to generate one of the best cricketing and spectator atmospheres in South Africa. Known as the "Bull Ring" for its atmosphere, it is the third ground to be used for Test matches in Johannesburg. The other two were the old Wanderers (now the Johannesburg Railway Station) and the Ellis Park Rugby Stadium.
Except for the grass embankment in front of the players enclosure and the Open Stand to the east all pavilions are covered or partially covered making it ideal for 30,000 spectators watching cricket during the hot highveld summers. Numerous catering outlets are situated behind the Western Pavilion, with barbecue facilities behind the Memorial Stand.
The relaying of pitches has once again restored the Wanderers as being true and fast allowing for exciting duels between ball and bat. A superb outfield, that drains very quickly, allows for some spectacular fielding displays.
Five 65-metre high floodlight masts illuminate the 10 pitches and the playing surface making it ideal for night cricket. Due to the high dew factor between February and March no day-night internationals are played over this period.
