fires a yorker bang on middle, and Shami jams it down to fine leg. They try a second run, and Shami is run-out. They had little option but to go for that run, as the throw arrived bang close to the stumps at the striker's end. Litton whipped the bails off with Shami not even in the frame. Bangladesh beat India by six runs
Bangladesh vs India, 12th Match, Super Four at Colombo, Asia Cup, Sep 15 2023 - Match Result
So Bangladesh fight their way to a close win despite Gill's 121. India's batting line-up, missing only Kohli among the regulars, fell just short of chasing 266 to give Bangladesh a consolation win. Sidharth Monga's report details the rest of it. Now there's only one match to go in this year's Asia Cup. Sri Lanka will host India in the final on Sunday. But before that comes, you can also follow New Zealand's chase against England, and Australia's attempt to climb Mount 417 vs South Africa. Until next time, this is Himanshu signing off on behalf of Monga, Thilak and Raghav! Good night!
Geo: "It is not as if this is a completely second-string Indian team - other than Tilak and Prasidh, everyone else has loads of experience with them....so it is very, very good for Bangladesh!"
Shakib Al Hasan is the Player of the Match: "We gave [chances] to the guys who haven't played much. We thought spinners will play a part, and luckily they did. I wasn't batting well during this Asia Cup, but today I had time to settle. When I hit my first boundary, it felt good. When the ball got older, spin was difficult to play. When Mahedi came on, it wasn't easy to bowl. He bowled five overs in a row in the end. I should give credit to Sakib (Tanzim) also. I think we have got a very good team [for the World Cup]. Lot of injuries, and players coming in and going out didn't help during this Asia Cup."
Time for the presentations
Zia: "@Habib: don't forget about Shanto and Ebadot"
Habib: "With their top pace trio (Taskin, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful), Tamim and Mushfiq missing, it's a big win for Bangladesh."
Rohit Sharma after the tight loss: "We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup. Axar batted brilliantly, but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Not to forget, Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game; he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard; there's no optional practice for Gill."
Tanzim Hasan: "First wicket of Rohit bhai was a dream wicket. I just concentrate on line and length. I mentally prepare myself for a long spell. That ball (the last ball to Shami), I believed I could bowl the perfect ball. Very good feeling."
11.04pm Another nail-biter from Colombo. Bangladesh edge past India - the third time in four matches between the teams that the result has gone Bangladesh's way - even as India happily experimented after having already made the Asia Cup final. But take nothing away from Bangladesh: they were without Mushfiqur and Taskin, having already been hit by injuries earlier in the tournament. A win too late perhaps, but still a confidence booster ahead of the World Cup. Hang around for the presentations.
between long-on and deep midwicket. Read this slower ball on a length just outside off, and heaved across the line after getting his front leg out of the way
change of pace, and Shami is foxed again. This was on a length though - in the slot - on middle and off, and again at 96kph. Shami swung and missed, as the ball bounced over the stumps
12 off 4
slower ball on a full length just outside off, and at only 96kph. Shami swings and misses, and the ball rolls away to the keeper
Srini: "Shami can hit a couple of sixes. Just wait, watch and smack."
fires a short ball, which angles in to hit Shami on his helmet as he looks to pull but misses. They physio runs in immediately for a concussion test on Shami, who was hit just above his right ear
Tanzim will bowl the last over. India need 12.
fuller length, and another cutter angles across. Now he pushes away from his body, and misses
Three slips waiting
beats him with a slower ball. On a length on middle and leg, and angles away to end outside off, and past his poke
Prasidh the last man
taken by long-off rushing forward! Good catch, and this is a big setback for India. It was another cutter from Mustafizur, who went full and a bit wide of off. The roll of the wrists worked though, as Axar went lofting down the pitch. Not sure he really needed to do that though, given he just hit a four, and India hardly had wickets. But in the end, a a good catch by Tanzid
four wide of long-off! Just solid timing and placement, no real power there. Another full toss from Mustafizur, as it was angling into off. Axar drilled it down with a high right elbow to grab four
yorker length on middle and off, and pushed to mid-off for a hurried run. India thus have Axar back on strike
Shami at No. 10
Nuka: "@Nouman, Yes that's the only thing yet to achieve in Asia cup, we need super over today" --- Scheduling, rain, rescheduling, thrilling finishes, reserve day, floodlight failure... somebody please stop it!
low full toss on middle, and flicked right to the man at square leg. Easy catch for Mehidy, but hang on... even as Thakur is walking back, the two umpires converge and have a discussion. No, it was all for nothing. Thakur is out. There was only one man placed inside the circle in that region, and Thakur found him. Ideally, this should have been dispatched, but Thakur finally runs out of luck
Machakaari: "Fizz can't go for more than 8 off his last. He is a terrific death-overs bowler"
Now it is Axar's left thigh that is being attended to. And this seems to be a long break.
just over the fielder's hand sticking up! The long-on fielder moved to his right, but couldn't manage to hold on even as he leapt a bit. Axar got another ball in the slot and in the ideal length for him to free his arms, and bashed that back
Shakib now has a word with Mahedi
pumped over the bowler's head! Full and on the stumps from Mahedi, and Axar lofted that back down the ground with a forceful hit
heaves this length ball outside off, and plays wide of long-on. This looked like being two, but they manage only a single
very slow, and loopy outside off on a full length. Pushed aerially towards point
"Super over anyone?" --- Not me, Nouman!
short and outside off, and it keeps low. Swiped to long-on with a flat bat
short of a length around off, and punched to deep extra cover
31 from 18
that is great fielding by the man at long-on, as he runs and tumbles to stop two. Short of a length from Mustafizur, and Thakur pulled over midwicket
looks to hoick across the line, but is beaten. It was bowled at only 109kph, and on a length on middle, as it angled across to end outside off
the mid-on fielder turns around and runs, and the ball drops beyond him. Thakur looked to swipe this length ball on off, but mistimed it
Rajan: "Good test for India's tail!! Warm up for such situations in World Cup!!" --- But the fact is that India's tail in the World Cup might not be this short
