ENG Women vs IND Women, 1st ODI at Southampton, ENG-W vs IND-W, Jul 16 2025 - Match Result
IND Women won by 4 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)
That's it from us today. Hope you all enjoyed our coverage. Come back on Saturday for the second ODI as the series moves to Lord's. For now, I am Srinidhi, signing off on behalf of Miller, Sudeep and Chetan. Stays hydrated and take care!
Harmanpreet Kaur: "Happy with the way we bowled. Really happy with how we batted, especially Deepti. Her innings was key. We thought we gave away extra 20-30 runs, it was a good wicket to bat on. Fielding is something we are working on, we missed two chances today. We will try to do better. (on Rodrigues and Deepti's stand) Jemi is calm on the field and credit goes to Deepti for the way she batted."
Nat Sciver-Brunt: "Sophia and Alice played really, really well. And I think to get up to that total, I'd say, from down to four was brilliant. But ultimately, we probably didn't have enough runs because of those plus wickets. So, yeah, I guess that hurt us. (on outfield) It really dried out throughout our batting innings. So, yeah, with it being a midfield, we knew we were going to be running quite a lot and making sure that we could get those twos in. But, yeah, ultimately, we weren't able to get 280 in the middle. The way that we stayed in the game for as long as we did, I think it was brilliant. We really turned the pressure on. When we got that wicket, we put the pressure on. But, yeah, obviously, Deepti played really well. That partnership with Jemimah probably did the damage. I guess learnings - Hopefully, we can be a little bit more disciplined. I think that's the battle between both sides. (on Deepti's lbw that England didn't review) there wasn't much of an appeal. But, anyway, I think it was going down we felt. So, yeah, a bit of a weird one."
Deepti, Player of the Match: "We [Jemimah and I] had conversation that we needed to score five-six runs an over. (on sweeping) I have worked on my sweep shots in my earlier days. In these pitches, it helps. (On one-handed six) I have played these shots in practice. I got to learn that shot from Rishabh Pant. We played in England before. We enjoy each these conditions."
8.16pm: India clinch the opener by four wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. A very good chase from India and it was largely due to Rodrigues and Deepti's 90-run stand for the fifth wicket. While Rodrigues made a crisp 48, Deepti remained unbeaten on 63 to take the team home after coming ahead of Ghosh. The duo swept and swept hard to take the game away from England and brought the equation down. Dean and Ecclestone bowled well for England but misfields and 14 extras did not help them. There were some takeaway for the hosts, with Dunkley hitting 83 and Davidson-Richards scoring a neat 53. A total of 258 meant England needed to be at their best to defend this score.
