defended on the back foot
England vs South Africa, 1st Test at London, Jul 10 2008 - Match Result
Stumps 4.50 pm: It is stumps for real this time. The players, led by Amla, troop off. South Africa have batted fabulously on a flat pitch to survive two days and draw this Test. Amla remains unbeaten on 104, following centuries from Smith and McKenzie. Panesar toiled for 60 overs without a wicket in the second innings. England used six new-ball bowlers in this Test.
Shame it had to end this way really. The players appeared to think the game was over when the light was offered but then the sun came out once again and we had two overs - from KP and Cook, who made his bowling debut in Tests - before both captains decided to call it off.
When the day began, however, it was filled with promise. England needed nine wickets but they were unable to break a succession of determined and patient South African batsman. This is the sixth consecutive draw at Lord's.
Ian Bell is the Man of the Match for his 199 in the first innings.
That's it from us at Cricinfo today. On behalf of all the commentators during this Test - Gnasher, Will, Jenny and Jamie - this is George Binoy signing off . See you for the second Test, which begins on Friday at Headingley. Cheers.
was that the arm ball? It may have been one that just didn't spin, defended on the back foot
played off the pads towards square leg
that was the slower ball, 46mph, Prince lets it go
wide outside off stump left alone
pushed towards cover
Cook's bowling, his first ball in Test cricket. He bowls off spin by the way.
that was slow, couldn't have been over 50mph, Amla defends on the back foot, pointless this is
Amla strides forward to defend and gets into a slight tangle
defended back to the bowler from deep in the crease
Amla moves back and cuts off the back foot towards deep point, that was slower from KP
bowled flat through the air from over the wicket, defended on the back foot
defended on the back foot towards the leg side
We're ready to resume after that curious little interruption. There's bright light now. Both captains can agree to call the match off in a few minutes before the start of the final hour. It's all a bit strange. Pietersen will bowl.
4.37pm: I think the umpires have offered the light to the batsmen and they have accepted it. The players shake hands with each other and Amla walks off to cheers from the crowd. I'm not too sure what the scene is, the umpires are still in the middle. The bails have been removed. Is that the end of the match? The players shook hands as they left the ground.
South Africa lead by 44 runs. It hasn't been officially called off yet. It's just a matter of time. They will make a decision at 4.50pm. The umpires are still in the middle. The sun is out now and Billy Bowden has called back the players. Smith's smiling on the balcony.
banged in short down leg side
what happened there, Prince saw Collingwood pitching short and went to duck under it, or did he mean to push it on the off side? the ball hardly rises and smacks the bat handle after which lobs back over Collingwood's head, the bowler was so surprised that he did not react
Amla stands on the back foot and cuts a short of a length delivery towards point
full ball on off stump, defended on the front foot with bat close to pad
defended on the off side off the front foot
short of a length outside off stump, Amla latches on to it and cuts hard, the ball bounces in front of gully and bursts past him for four, Amla takes off his helmet and celebrates his first hundred at Lord's, all his team-mates come out to applaud him
Broad hits an excellent length and angles the ball into the left-hander, the ball hits the rough and seams away from Prince who moves forward to defend but gets beaten
good length but the line is outside off, left along by the batsman
