it's all over, he makes a bit of room and swipes it across the line and bets midwicket, Maharoof can't hide his delight and Murali gives him a bear hug, Shakib squats in disappointment
Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Final at Dhaka, Jan 16 2009 - Match Result
The entire Sri Lanka support staff make their way on to the field, Murali's wife cheers from the stands. He may not have done much with the ball today but his exhilarating hitting in the Powerplay killed all of Bangladesh's hopes.
I need to catch my breath folks. This has to be one of the most intriguing matches I have seen.
Bangladesh did everything right in the field till the last Powerplay. They should have fired in the yorkers but instead, Murali was given width and the right length to play his favourite slog. The gamble of persisting with Rubel didn't pay off. But having said that, one has to praise Bangladesh for the way they fought. They will take back a lot of positives from here.
Looks like it will be a tough choice for the Man of the Match. Sangakkara's application and patience was of the top draw. Murali biffed his team home in a hurry. I'd give it to the man who shaped the chase, that is Sangakkara.
Satvir from India: "Sri Lanka may have won the match, but Bangladesh have won the confidence of its supporters. They showed how they can shape some really great victories. Hats off to them!"
Stay with us for the presentation.
Ashraful collects the runners up cheque. He said: "I'm really proud of my players. We fell short by 30 runs I think. We played too many bad shots. Raqibul and our bowlers did extremely well."
Sangakkara is the Man of the Match for his all-round show today. He also took two brilliant catches. He said: "Bangladesh showed a lot of character. I'm surprised to get this because Murali won this for us in the end. We just had to bat the overs and bat out the game for as long as possible. I think the guys showed a lot of character but we need to improve."
Shakib is the Man of the Series: "All the bowlers had a good time but not the batsmen." Didn't say much there.
Jayawardene: "Kumar batted brilliantly, Murali has been practicing his batting for the last couple of months. Our fielding was quite good today. We just need to keep working hard and improving. We need to bat through." He also thanks the crowd.
This series didn't have much going for it on paper before it began but it turned out to be more evenly matched than one imagined. Sri Lanka now head to Pakistan for three ODIs before taking on India. Zimbabwe stay back in Bangladesh for three ODIs.
I enjoyed bringing this thriller to you. Thanks for your company. This is Kanishkaa signing off. Cheers!
and the scores are level! He makes room to a short ball and swings, the top edge sails over a hapless Rahim and runs away fir four
Murali never ceases to amaze! He makes room to an overpitched ball and he clubs it high over deep midwicket! Good Lord that sailed into the crowd
strays on the body and he shuffles and clips it to the on side
makes room and Rubel follows him. he swings and misses and Rahim does brilliantly to fling himself to his left and save a boundary
he makes room again and biffs a short ball from outside off, the ball is in the air for a few anxious moments before dropping short of midwicket
bangs in the bouncer, he makes room and tries an upper cut but there isn;t any signal by the umpires, Murali gestures in surprise
Will that 20-run over cost them? Remarkably Rubel continues. Will this gamble pay off?
makes room to cut but the ball skids through, he chops it down to the covers
thrusts his pad forward and taps it to the off side
gets forward and works it to the on side
strays on the pads and he clips it away wide of short fine leg
gets well forward and defends again, he's patient here
flighted on middle and leg and defended
15 off 24 balls
this is pulsating stuff! Rubal overpitches on middle and leg, he makes room, gets under it and lofts him for a straight six
fires it on a full length outside off and he nearly feathers an edge to the keeper
oh well! He stays at the crease this time and swings him across the line and beats fine leg, a stunning passage of play here!
makes room and drives him past mid-off this time, Ashraful does brilliantly to pull it back before the rope
he isn't finished yet, he over pitches on middle and leg, ha makes room and scoops it over mid-on, the fielder tries to pull it back but the ball beats him
well well Murali has some fun, he makes room on seeing a rank log hop and biffs it across the line, there's nobody close to cow corner to cut it off
Third Powerplay taken. A little late in the day?
punches it through the off side and Ashraful shows good commitment at mid-off to slide and cut it off
