Pulled into the grassbanks and it's West Indies' first series win against Bangladesh since 2014. Short and outside off, Rutherford made it look like a worse ball than it was. Flat over midwicket
West Indies vs Bangladesh, 2nd ODI at Basseterre, WI vs BAN, Dec 10 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
West Indies won by 7 wickets (with 79 balls remaining)
Comfortable win for the hosts, series in the bag. They'll look for a whitewash in a couple of days. Can Bangladesh fight back as they build towards the Champions trophy? Follow to find out. Thanks for tuning in today. I'm Ekanth, signing off on behalf of co-comms Shashwat Kumar, and out scorer, K Vairavan.
Shai Hope, WI captain: Very pleased. Asked guys to get powerplay wickets which they did. Great to see Jayden did well. We always analyse our games, and it's great to see the bowlers bounce back the way they did. Gotta tick boxes and keep improving. We were clinical. We've been struggling to win series at hope, hope to finish 3-0 now. Debutant bowled well. He got an edge early. Great to see him in international cricket. Happy to see him out at the park. Every game is important, we're trying to earn points and get up on the ladder to ensure we make the next ODI World Cup.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh captain: We didn't bat well in the middle overs. No partnerships. Back to back wickets. Mahmudullah and Sakib played well, but it was our mistake (with bat in hand that cost us). Seales and Co bowled really well. We didn't get early runs. We were 20 for 4, but even then we thought we can come back. Our score wasn't enough, 300-plus was needed. We bowled really well in the first ten overs, esp our best bowler - Rana. On this wicket, it's hard for bowlers to defend an under-par score.
Jayden Seales, POTM: Really pleased. Didn't go as well as I wanted first game, thought about what to do differently and did that. I assessed conditions faster. Figured out batters were coming forward and adjusted to ensure it played into my hands. I knew I had to play a bigger role with Alzarri not around, happy it came off today. I want to bowl good areas all the time and not go searching early.
DWolfman: "From 11 straight ODI defeats to 2 consecutive wins. Dare us West Indies fans hope for a 3rd in a row?" Watch out, England, when they start the summer
Scott: "Anvith nailed that one, they bring it home in 17 balls exactly. Nicely predicted."
Shoriful couldn't find sideways movement. Mehidy blew hot and cold. Nahid Rana was the best bowler on show but couldn't make breakthroughs.
4:19pm: Series sealed, thanks to Seales, with a game to go. The first-innings total was over 50 runs under par on a pitch that played well for the batters despite it being re-used. King and Lewis' century stand all but confirmed Bangladesh's fate. They didn't have a great time with strike rotation but there were early boundaries and shackle-breaking to keep WI going. Lewis made up for a slow start and King's aggressive shots were glorious. Both of them were hit on the body by the pacy Nahid Rana, Lewis even fell a couple balls later, but overall, they negotiated him reasonably well. King and Carty then cruised before Hope and Rutherford mopped up.
Length on fourth, punched to deep point. 116ks. Shoriful giving his cutters a bit of practice
Low fully outside off is square driven to deep point
Walloped into the manual scoreboard past square leg. This was a cutter into the pitch, pulled from top-of-thigh height with fast hands and a lot of wristwork
Punches the length ball on fourth to mid-off. 127ks
Shoriful returns for what could be his last over for the day. Shadows lengthening btw
Full on leg, nudged towards long leg
Full at the stumps, defended to the bowler
Chops a shortish ball through backward point
Fullish ball has been dead-batted to the bowler
Low fully on leg is loopy. So it looked. 89ks. Worked to deep midwicket
Goes back and tucks the 78ks ball to deep square leg
Wide and full, 86ks, Hope reaches out and drives to cover
Flat on a length, leg-stump line, nudged towards short fine leg for a quick single. Good calling from Hope, Rutherford was ball-watching a bit but had enough time to make it
Odinlass: "Well, John Doe's second innings predictions didn't all come true but today's interaction has been a pleasure. Thank you, Ekanth, John Doe and everyone else. I'll be signing off now. Nighto!" Cheers
Pulls the shortish 91ks ball on leg stump to deep square leg
Lumped over midwicket. Legbreak from beyond the straight spun away towards top of off, but Hope judged length early and had ample time to power the pull into the grassbanks. Just 19 needed now
navin: "No! No! No! who changed the script? Rutherford should not be there unless he can score minimum 50 runs!"
Square driven off the back foot to deep point. Slowish and a touch short
Cramped for room but he manages to slap it over wide mid-off. A touch short, spun back in towards top of middle, Rutherford's body was close to leg stump but the front foot had slid down leg
Anvith: "Can we get a message out to the batsmen? Instead of 31 runs off 17 overs, how about 31 off 17 balls to make it a bit exciting?" Yeah, they have tried that for a little while
Quicker. 86ks. Hope, who went back in the crease, was hurried a bit. May have even tempered his shot. Ended up inside edging a full-faced block towards midwicket
Fullish length ball on leg, 79ks, nudged towards midwicket
Goes back and punches the shortish ball to long-off
