Ashwin finishes it with successive sixes! The Dragons spread their wings and they are going on to contest the game that matters! Another slower delivery that sits up outside off and is begging to be hit. Ashwin marches down the track and forehands it over long on. Perhaps Ashwin is keeping an eye on the Paris Olympics, and he has struck gold for the Dragons tonight!
Tiruppur vs Dindigul, Qualifier 2 at Chennai, TNPL, Aug 02 2024 - Match Result
Dindigul won by 9 wickets (with 55 balls remaining)
10:15pm That will be all from us for tonight. We hope you enjoyed our coverage just as much as we loved bringing it to you. We will be back at it on Sunday for the final of the 2024 edition of the TNPL, where the Dindigul Dragons will take on the Kovai Kings. We look forward to your company, and until then, this is goodbye from me and Sudeep. Take care!
P Vignesh, Player of the Match: (On his interactions with Ashwin and Chakravarthy) Had nice interactions with them and my roles were also specified from early. I just wanted to stick to my process. Wanted to do my routines properly and it worked out well.
R Ashwin, Dindigul Dragons captain: We have still not produced a complete game yet. Maybe we can bring our best game to the final. I try to tell these youngsters whatever I can, that is my way of giving back to the game. Sometimes, I am right, sometimes not (laughs). Coming into the tournament, I planned to open. But in a rain-affected game, I injured my hamstring. It is getting better now. He (Shivam Singh) will be available to play the next game but that injury could have been avoided, that one run could have been let go.
Sai Kishore, Tiruppur Tamizhans captain: The whole season has been fantastic. To qualify as the second-placed team, from the position we were in, was good. We did not take the right choices at the start. Silly errors from us and it was a 150-160 wicket, we could have fought with that score. We tried to get there but couldn't. (On bowling to Ashwin) For every cricketer in Tamil Nadu and in fact for every Indian cricketer, he is an inspiration. It has been a challenging season for me (not being at a 100%), but this season makes me want to push again (next year). Lot of players had good seasons. Hard to pick one player. Two-three players can definitely be mainstays for Tamil Nadu cricket. I also want to wish good luck to the two teams for the final.
9:58pm Clinical and classy. Two words that epitomize everything about this run-chase. Ashwin, with Shivam Singh injured, walked out to open and he made it look very, very easy. The spinners endured his wrath inside the powerplay, and to be fair, everyone seemed out of ideas when bowling to him. He played the sweep, the reverse sweep, the lofted shots and the pulls to absolute perfection, helping the Dragons pummel the Tamizhans into submission.
Not a lot to shout about for the Tiruppur Tamizhans. They did not have many to defend, and their bowling was not great. Sai Kishore was taken apart and that sort of summed up their plight. Getting to this stage, considering where they were at one point, was a decent effort but having gotten here, they will feel they could not quite turn up when the occasion demanded.
dispatched with disdain! Half-tracker outside off and Ashwin is not going to miss out. Opens up his front hip and clubs it over deep mid wicket!
slower bumper on leg stump. Indrajith rolls his wrists and pulls it towards fine leg
off-pace again, on a back of a length outside off. Indrajith helps it behind square and places it enough to fine leg's left to smuggle a second
slower ball on a fullish length just outside off. Indrajith comes forward and defends
cutter on a shortish length outside off. Indrajith waits on it and glides it down to third man
length on middle and leg. Ashwin flicks it away towards deep mid wicket
length on the pads. Indrajith eases it out to deep square leg
off-pace on a length outside off. Ashwin throws his hands at it and edges it down to third man
gorgeous! In the slot just outside off. Ashwin springs onto the front foot and creams it over the fielder at mid off!
back of a length on leg stump. Indrajith tucks it off his hips towards deep square leg
a 25-ball fifty for the Dindigul Dragons skipper! Back to back fifties too! Half-tracker outside off and Ashwin latches onto it. Rocks back and hammers it over mid wicket. Raises his bat and soaks in the applause - he deserves every bit of it!
leg-cutter on a back of a length just outside off. Indrajith opens his bat face and guides it to third man
slower bumper on middle and leg. Ashwin waits an eternity for it before pulling it towards deep square leg
dug into the track outside off. Indrajith hops up onto his toes and runs it down to third man
Indrajith joins his skipper
a breakthrough for the Tamizhans, finally! Full outside off. Khumar throws his hands at it but the bat face opens upon contact. Cannot generate the power he is after and Bafna, who times his leap to perfection at backward point, does the rest. Too little, too late, though, you'd assume!
length outside off. Khumar advances but scuffs his drive towards extra cover
Bhuvaneswaran into the attack. The Dragons need only 28 more
Ashwin putting on a batting clinic! Sai Kishore tries to jam in a yorker outside off but Ashwin is just too good. That reverse has been working a charm tonight and he belts this past short third to further deflate the Tamizhans!
nails the reverse sweep! Sai Kishore is running out of ideas here. Full and wide again. Ashwin decides the wants to access the region behind point and does so with absolute conviction!
big appeal, and given! Reviewed by Ashwin instantly! Darted in very full on middle and off. Ashwin looks for the reverse and seems to miss it. The ball strikes the pad and rolls away towards short third. Ashwin is adamant he has gotten bat on it, and he has plenty of reason to believe so. Right off the toe-end, and Ashwin survives!
