High full toss, will it be a no-ball? No, and Maharaj's praying. His prayers have been answered, in fact, as SA sneak a four-run win It was wide and he tried to heave it across the line. The line was outside off and he couldn't drag it, spliced it to cover and the celebrations followed.
South Africa vs Bangladesh, 21st Match, Group D at New York, T20 World Cup, Jun 10 2024 - Match Result
David Miller and Klaasen's 79-run partnership is SA's highest for the 5th wicket in T20Is, breaking the record of 77 between van der Dussen and Wiaan Mulder
Whatever the discourse around the New York pitch is, it sure is producing thrillers on tap. One umpiring decision might push some attention aside but the call can be lived with, as Shanto showed during the presentation. South Africa fans can rejoice that they're winning games defending totals and while chasing. Just two more games remaining in New York, and they'll be tomorrow and day after. Two night games tomorrow as well. Hope to see you as we Matt Stonie our way through the tournament. For now, it's goodbye from me, Ekanth, my co-commentator, Himanshu Agrawal, and our scorers, Chandan Duorah and M Venkat Raghav.
Aiden Markram, South Africa captain: You're always pretty nervous in the final over in a game like that. It was always on a knife's edge, it can make you mentally tired. It's always nice to be in them though. Sometimes you get on the right side, sometimes not, but it's very entertaining. 19.5 (full toss) could've gone anywhere, could've gone two more metres further and we'd have had a different conversation. Like I mentioned, a few things went our way today, very fortunate on that to get on the right side. (Will Maharaj bowl the 20th over again) Depends on the situation, you want to drag the game as long as you can, so you use quicks to attack. Today was one of those days where the seamers were bowling well, we wanted to drag it to the end where anything could happen in the last over. We're putting Klaasen and Miller under pressure but they've been exceptional. They've gone back-to-back with crucial partnerships, got us to a score that's luckily enough to win but still one we could defend. Fantastic for Klaasy to get back in form.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh captain: Everyone was nervous, but were confident when Jaker was there. It didn't happen but that's okay. Tanzid really worked hard last couple of games, we needed new-ball wickets and he showed his character. This is the match we should have won, we nearly did but the last couple of overs they bowled well. It can happen in cricket. Rishad is very good, he's bowled well in the last two games and in practice. We've struggled with legspin in 10-15 years but hope he goes far. Wherever we play, we get a lot of support. Hope it's the same in the West Indies.
Heinrich Klaasen, POTM (On the finish) Laughs It was not so nice on the heart but glad to go over the line. The wicket is not great for strokeplay but David showed in the previous game how to bat on this wicket. Got info from him. We got a decent score but were 10 runs short. We got experience and more or less a one-day mindset till the 15-over mark. Hopefully we could've pushed on but not. Win will give big confidence for the boys, we've had three pressurised games now. We're through which is nice. One more to go and then onto the next phase.
Mak: "A neck to neck game decided by strange rule. Horrible example!" Horrible is a bit harsh but the frustration is understandable.
Rahul: "ICC... Please conduct Test championship finals in this NY pitch..."

South Africa's new-ball bowlers weren't on the mark
Anyway, South Africa were almost out of it, because of that ball and the penultimate ball, which should've gone out the ground. But Mahmudullah couldn't middle the full toss and Markram, cool as ever at long-on, took the match-sealing catch. The rest of the innings was as scrappy as expected on a tough deck. Bangladesh tried to be proactive wherever possible, stay in the game and finish it off. Of course, no one could score big or at a lightning pace but Hridoy and Mahmudullah almost took them through. Hridoy was a bit unlucky to get lbw in the 18th over, that went for just two runs, along with Mahmudullah, who fell on 19.5.
2:01pm Oh boy, those non leg-byes. They could be worth a 1000. The fact is 16.2 was given out lbw, the decision was overturned, Bangladesh have never beaten South Africa in a T20I (streak is now 9-0) and in the end South Africa have all but qualified for the next round. Apparently, it's not a mathematical guarantee yet, but Nepal will have to win all thee, including games against against SA and Bangladesh, to get through. Netherlands, too can get to six, but need to beat Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for it.
Taskin, at No. 9, has to hit his first, most likely only, ball out of the ground
Mahmudullah connected but can't clear the long-on boundary. The crowd are stunned back to silence again. The veteran batter is in disbelief, has hand on head and has to walk back. It was in his favour - full toss looped outside off, he clubbed it with a flattish bat and got a lot of height. Markram ran to the left, timed his hop and took a brilliant catch
Close lbw call. Not given, Maharaj signals for it right away, batters run a single to short third. He went across early, back foot well outside off off stump and front leg outside leg, he tried to smack it across the line - go over midwicket but missed the slog sweep. Impact the only issue here for SA and it is outside off.
The rising cheer doesn't hit crescendo as Jaker elevates the full ball but can't clear long-on. He got close to the pitch but the impact was from too far low and Markram took a bread-basket catch
Low full toss is thrashed downtown, the slow outfield gives an extra second for the fielder and the batters but the second isn't on. Maharaj can't collect the throw on the bounce and Mahmudullah, who was falling short, made it
Tries to carve the length ball square but inside edges it into the pitch, single to square leg
Mahmudullah loses balance but manages to sneak a wide.
No fielding restrictions, SA manage to drag the over rate back. Which team will be happy with a Super Over from here, as Graeme Smith asks. I'd say SA, as it'll be Maharaj. His first in a T20I. But he's a canny guy. All deep fielders in front of square. Around the wicket
Mistimes the pull but gets two to that midwicket pocket again. The bat has been busted, Jaker - to check if the bat was broken - whacked it face-first onto the knee and it was broken proper.
It was there to hit around the corner, Mahmudullah tried doing it with a help-along heave. Can't do it. Wonder if it was double bat
Has a hack but it's mistimed. Bottom hand comes off as he tries to drag the length ball from just outside off, finds deep midwicket
He can't but will pinch two. Length ball at leg stump was flicked into the midwicket pocket again
"Jaker needs a boundary just to get the fans back on," says Nasser Hussain as Baartman runs in
Rivian: "With not much batting left, this match is in South Africas pocket. Only Mahmadullah is between them and victory given he has done it few times. Hard to hit on this pitch."
Into the pitch, at the hips, clipped to midwicket which is open. Baartman gives it all to chase the ball, slides and keeps it to one
Mahmudullah tries to take him on, can't lay bat on it. He got the width and the fullish length he wanted but the pace and bounce took the ball above the bat swing. Grimaces in frustration
Saha: "You keep your best bowler for 19th over. Markram hasn't used the bowlers well in this match. Match will be over in Maharaj's over" It will be Baartman to bowl
Pitched up again, Mahmudullah happy to knock it to long-on for a single. Ball ricochets into a gap after a direct hit but they won't go for the overthrow
He does try to get the boundary but plinks it to mid-off's left. They hare for a single. Was pitched right up at pace, he cleared the front leg and tried to go downtown, but the bat face opened on impact
Mid-on and mid-off won't go back for the last two balls. Will Jaker see this as a free hit?
Galib: "That wicket of Hridoy did more damage than the other fours did combined. "
Pitched up at the stumps, pushed to mid-on. No single
Hard length in the channel, guided to point off the back foot
SA behind on time, 11 minutes left if I read the graphic right. If they don't complete the overs on time, they won't be able to have five fielders in the ring
Length around off, defended to point
That's new. Rabada lost his run-up and the ball and will reload. That rolled along the pitch, not sure if the batter could've hit it
Bangladesh might be denied another single here. LBW is given but that looked like it was going down leg, even on first view. Could it be clipping through? Hridoy went across and tried to clip the length ball off the back foot. He was deep in the crease and was hit on the top flap of the front pad. Ooh, it is clipping leg stump. The silence subsumes the ground again, huge wicket. Hridoy was the danger guy but the slight wobble and in-movement on the ball costs him. Big smile on KG's face
Pitched up around off, punched to mid-off
